By the expert team at Mr. BigStuff Labor and Moving - Your trusted moving advisors since 2024
Let me ask you something...
Have you ever wondered why most people NEVER get paid for damaged items after a move?
Or why the fine print in moving contracts seems deliberately designed to confuse even Harvard-trained lawyers?
Or perhaps why moving companies squirm and change the subject when you ask detailed questions about their insurance coverage?
There's a reason for all this. And it's not pretty.
The moving industry has a dirty little secret they don't want you to know.
Most standard moving insurance is designed to PROTECT THE MOVING COMPANY - not your precious belongings.
That's right. That "free coverage" they're offering? It's worth about 60 cents per pound. Which means your 50-pound flat-screen TV worth $1,000 would be compensated at...$30.
Feel protected yet?
My name is Jae Burnham, founder of Mr. BigStuff Labor and Moving. After 15+ years in the moving industry (including founding and running U-Save Moving And Storage), I've seen every trick in the book.
And today, I'm pulling back the curtain on the moving insurance game to reveal 27 critical facts the big moving companies hope you never discover.
This information has helped our clients protect belongings worth millions of dollars. And today, it's yours.
The so-called "free coverage" offered by most movers (required by federal law) compensates at approximately 60 cents per pound. That means:
Your 5-pound laptop worth $1,200? Covered for $3.
Family heirloom china weighing 20 pounds? You'll get $12.
Antique furniture weighing 100 pounds? A whopping $60 compensation.
REAL TALK: This coverage exists to meet minimum legal requirements, not to actually protect your belongings.
When movers offer "comprehensive coverage," they're not telling you about these escape clauses:
Most policies exclude items YOU packed (even if the box was perfectly packed)
Many exclude "acts of God" with incredibly broad definitions
Hidden deductibles that make small claims pointless
"Current value" often means "depreciated value" (that 5-year-old sofa? Worth almost nothing according to their calculations)
One of our clients, Sarah from Phoenix, learned this the hard way when her previous mover damaged her $3,000 dining table. Their "full coverage" policy paid just $350 because of "depreciation." She was devastated.
Here's an industry secret: Many large moving companies have internal policies requiring claims adjusters to reject claims on the first submission.
They know that:
70% of customers never resubmit after the first denial
85% will accept a lowball offer after initial rejection
90% don't know their full legal rights to compensation
WAKE-UP CALL: The system is designed to frustrate you into giving up.
Did you know? Most policies only cover visible external damage. That means if your TV, computer, or sound system stops working after the move but looks fine on the outside, you're likely out of luck.
THE REALITY: Internal electronic damage is among the most common moving casualties and among the least covered.
Nearly every moving policy specifically excludes:
Cash, coins, and currency
Stock certificates and important documents
Jewelry and precious stones
Medications and perishables
INSIDER SECRET: These items should ALWAYS travel with you, never in the moving truck.
Most moving companies value antiques at "functional replacement" - meaning they'll replace your 200-year-old antique dresser with a similar-sized modern one from a furniture store.
THE OUTRAGE: Your irreplaceable family heirlooms are valued as if they came from IKEA.
That painting you love? Most basic and even "full value" moving policies limit artwork compensation to $100 per piece unless you purchase additional coverage that few companies actually offer.
Pianos, guitars, violins and other instruments are typically excluded from standard coverage due to their sensitivity to temperature, humidity and handling requirements.
Whether it's rare books, sports memorabilia, or vintage wine, collections are typically valued at a fraction of their actual worth and often excluded entirely.
That custom-built entertainment center that perfectly fit your previous home? If damaged, most policies will reimburse you for a mass-produced equivalent.
Most moving companies require you to file a claim within 9 days of delivery. They know most people are busy unpacking and settling in, often discovering damage after this window closes.
When you sign the delivery receipt, you're typically only confirming no "apparent damage." But there's a separate, much shorter window (often just 5 days) to report "concealed damage" discovered after unpacking.
INSIDER TIP: Never sign a delivery receipt without noting: "Subject to inspection for concealed damage."
Moving between states? Federal protections apply. Moving within the same state? Those protections often vanish, replaced by much weaker state regulations that vary widely.
Most policies exclude damage from:
Weather (rain, snow, heat)
Natural disasters (even minor ones)
Traffic accidents
Road conditions
Labor strikes
THE REALITY CHECK: Almost any damage can be attributed to an "Act of God" if the company tries hard enough.
Many full-value protection policies only cover items packed by the moving company's employees - at an additional cost, of course.
Most moving contracts contain mandatory arbitration clauses that prevent you from taking the company to court - and the arbitrators are often industry-friendly.
No scratch, dent or imperfection on your furniture? Doesn't matter. Without extensive photo documentation, companies often claim damage existed before the move.
The industry average for Full Value Protection is 1-2% of the declared value. Yet the actual claims paid out represent only 0.15% of that value.
THE MATH: You're paying 6-13 times more than the actuarial risk justifies.
Even with Full Value Protection, most policies have per-item and per-shipment maximum values buried deep in the contract.
The typical deductible structure makes claiming for single-item damage pointless, which is exactly what the companies want.
Many customers purchase separate moving insurance without realizing it duplicates coverage they already have through homeowners or renters insurance.
MONEY-SAVING TIP: Check with your home insurance provider before paying for additional coverage.
To successfully file a claim, most companies require:
Original purchase receipts (for items you bought years ago)
Professional appraisals (at your expense)
Photo evidence of condition before the move
Proof the damage occurred during transit
Multiple repair estimates
THE REALITY: These requirements are designed to make successful claims rare.
Even when damage is acknowledged, companies fight to repair items you'd prefer to replace, or replace items you'd prefer to repair - whichever costs them less.
The industry average for claims processing? 3-6 months. This delay tactic works because many customers give up out of frustration.
Claims adjusters are typically authorized to offer up to the full value but start with lowball offers knowing most customers will accept rather than fight.
When you accept payment for a claim, you're typically required to sign a release absolving the company of any further liability - even if additional damage is discovered later.
File multiple claims, and you might find yourself unable to get service from major moving companies in the future. Yes, they actually maintain these lists.
After 15+ years in the moving industry, I founded Mr. BigStuff Labor and Moving with one mission: to provide the honest, transparent moving experience I wished existed when I started in this business.
Here's what makes us different:
Transparent Coverage Options: We explain exactly what's covered, what's excluded, and what it costs - in plain English, not legal jargon.
Customized Protection Plans: We don't believe in one-size-fits-all. Your grandmother's china requires different protection than your IKEA bookshelf.
Documentation Assistance: We help you properly document your belongings before the move, making any potential claims process smooth and successful.
Fast Claims Resolution: While the industry average is 3-6 months, our claims are typically resolved within 14 days.
No Loophole Exploitation: We don't hide behind "acts of God" or technicalities. If we damaged it, we fix it. Period.
Moving Plans Designed for REAL Protection: Our moving plans include appropriate coverage built in - not as an expensive add-on.
75+ Five-Star Reviews: Our client testimonials speak for themselves. When we make a mistake (we're human, it happens), we make it right.
Jennifer T., Lansing: "After a nightmare move with a national company that damaged my furniture and denied my claims, working with Mr. BigStuff was like a breath of fresh air. When they accidentally scratched my dining table, they had it professionally repaired within a week - no questions asked!"
Michael K., Grand Ledge: "Their honest approach to insurance and coverage saved me nearly $300 compared to quotes from other companies. And when my TV was damaged, they replaced it with an equivalent model in just 3 days."
Samantha R., Leslie: "The peace of mind knowing my belongings were truly protected was worth every penny. Their transparent approach to coverage is refreshing in an industry known for fine print and deception."
Here's the cold, hard truth most moving companies won't tell you:
Standard moving insurance is designed to protect THEM, not YOU.
But it doesn't have to be that way.
At Mr. BigStuff Labor and Moving, we believe you deserve:
Clear, honest information about your coverage options
Fair compensation if accidents happen
A moving partner who values your belongings as much as you do
Your family photos. Your grandmother's china. That sofa you saved for months to buy. The dining table where your family shares meals.
These aren't just "items" to be valued by weight or depreciated value. They're the physical elements of your life and memories.
They deserve better protection than 60 cents per pound.
Don't wait until it's too late. Don't become another statistic - another customer fighting a losing battle against insurance loopholes and claim denials.
