Let me ask you something...
Have you ever felt that sinking feeling in your stomach when the final bill for your moving truck rental arrived?
That moment when you realize those "low daily rates" advertised in bold, bright letters somehow morphed into a financial nightmare?
You're not alone.
As a 15-year veteran of the moving industry and former owner of U-Save Moving And Storage, I've watched thousands of Lansing residents fall victim to the same deceptive practices year after year.
What I'm about to reveal might shock you. It certainly shocked me when I first discovered the depth of these industry-wide practices.
After testing the five major truck rental companies serving the Lansing area, I uncovered a pattern of hidden fees, misleading advertising, and predatory pricing that's literally costing Michigan families thousands of dollars every single move.
But here's the good news: once you know how the game is played, you'll never be fooled again.
Last month, I decided to conduct an experiment. Having helped countless families move across Lansing and throughout Michigan over the past 15 years, I'd heard all the horror stories about rental truck experiences.
But I needed hard evidence.
So I reserved identical 15-foot moving trucks from the five major companies serving the Lansing area:
U-Haul
Penske
Budget
Enterprise
Ryder
Each reservation was for the exact same scenario: a standard local move within Lansing, from East Lansing to the Westside neighborhood, approximately 6 miles apart.
The advertised rates seemed reasonable.
But what happened next left me both furious and determined to protect my community from these predatory practices.
The first thing you need to understand is that the advertised "base rate" for rental trucks is essentially meaningless.
When I called each company to reserve my 15-foot truck for a local Lansing move, here's what I was quoted:
U-Haul: $29.95/day
Budget: $29.99/day
Penske: $39.99/day
Enterprise: $39.95/day
Ryder: $44.95/day
Seems straightforward, right? That's exactly what they want you to think.
But when I arrived to pick up these trucks and received the final contracts, the numbers told a completely different story.
U-Haul's $29.95 special? The final bill came to $127.43.
That included:
Environmental Fee: $5
Damage Protection (which they strongly implied was mandatory): $40
Mileage charges: $0.99/mile (For just 12 miles round trip: $11.88)
Fuel surcharge: $15.60
"Location convenience fee": $25
Budget's $29.99 deal ballooned to $138.76.
Their extras included:
Administrative Fee: $8.99
Environmental Recovery Fee: $4
Optional (but heavily pushed) insurance: $38.99
Mileage: $0.99/mile (12 miles = $11.88)
"Peak demand adjustment": $44.90
I won't bore you with every line item from all five companies, but the pattern was identical. Those advertised rates of $29.95 to $44.95? By the time I drove the trucks back to their lots, I had paid between $127 and $189 for EACH ONE.
For a single day, local move. In Lansing.
Here's where things get truly devious.
When I examined the pre-rental inspection forms, I discovered that four out of five companies had recorded the starting mileage incorrectly – each error conveniently adding 5-10 miles to my final bill.
When confronted, the response was always the same: "Must have been a clerical error. We can adjust that for you."
But how many Lansing residents check that starting mileage? How many are in such a rush on moving day that they just sign whatever is put in front of them?
According to my research, less than 8% of customers verify the starting mileage on their rental trucks.
That's not a mistake. That's a business model.
Perhaps the most egregious practice I uncovered relates to fuel. Every company has a "return with the same amount of fuel" policy. Seems fair, until you look closer.
Three of the five companies provided trucks with fuel gauges that read "Full" – but were actually missing 2-3 gallons of fuel.
How do I know this? I immediately drove each truck to the Shell station on East Saginaw Highway and filled them completely.
Truck #1: Took 2.8 gallons to fill when supposedly already "full"
Truck #2: Took 1.9 gallons
Truck #3: Took 3.2 gallons
At current Lansing gas prices (averaging $3.45/gallon for regular), that's an instant $6.50 to $11.04 profit per rental.
But here's where the real profit comes in: If you return the truck truly at the same level you received it (which appeared full but wasn't), you'll be charged their refueling rate – typically $7.99 to $9.99 per gallon, plus a "refueling service fee" of $25-$30.
For many Lansing residents, that's an extra $50-$80 charge that they never saw coming.
When I picked up each truck, every single rental agent used nearly identical language about their damage protection options.
The clear implication? If you decline their insurance (which ranges from $38.99 to $69.99 per day), you're assuming unlimited personal liability.
What they don't tell you? Most major credit cards automatically provide rental truck insurance if you use that card for the rental. And most homeowner's and renter's insurance policies extend some coverage to rental vehicles – including moving trucks.
When I politely mentioned these facts, the tone of the conversation changed dramatically.
One agent at the East Michigan Avenue location actually admitted: "Yeah, but we're instructed to really push the protection packages. It's how we make our numbers."
Living in a college town with Michigan State University creating constant rental demand has made Lansing a prime target for these practices.
The high volume of first-time renters – students and young professionals – creates the perfect environment for these deceptive practices to thrive.
Add in the seasonal nature of moves (highest in summer and at semester changes), and you have the perfect storm of high demand and limited supply – giving these companies even more leverage to exploit customers.
In fact, pricing data shows that Lansing residents pay, on average, 18% more for identical trucks compared to similar-sized cities without large universities.
Beyond the financial impact, there's a safety issue here that's rarely discussed.
When I inspected each of the five trucks, I found alarming maintenance issues on three of them:
One had brake pads worn to dangerous levels
Another had a slow power steering fluid leak
A third had tires worn well below recommended tread depth
Each of these issues could lead to catastrophic failure on Michigan's notoriously rough roads – especially during winter months when moving conditions around Lansing are already challenging.
When I brought these issues to the attention of management, the response was telling: "These trucks are rented every day. If there was a real problem, someone would have reported it by now."
That cavalier attitude toward safety is perhaps the most disturbing revelation of my entire investigation.
After discovering the depths of these industry practices, I became determined to offer Lansing residents a better option. That's precisely why I founded Mr. BigStuff Labor and Moving at the beginning of 2024.
Our approach is fundamentally different:
Instead of renting a truck yourself and dealing with all these hidden fees and potential safety issues, our professional moving team handles everything for you.
No hidden fees. Ever.
No fuel charges.
No mileage manipulation.
No insurance upsells.
No safety concerns.
Just honest, upfront pricing from a local Lansing company that actually cares about your experience.
Since launching in January 2024, we've already helped hundreds of Lansing families avoid the rental truck scam.
Maria T. from the Eastside neighborhood shares:
"After spending over $400 on a truck rental last year that was quoted at '$19.95 per day,' I was skeptical about moving companies. But Mr. BigStuff was transparent from the beginning. The price they quoted was the price I paid – and it was actually LESS than what I would have spent on another truck rental disaster."
And James K. from downtown Lansing reports:
"The peace of mind alone was worth every penny. No driving an unfamiliar truck, no hidden fees, no stress. The team was professional, efficient, and actually made moving day enjoyable. I'll never rent a truck again."
Let's compare the real costs for a typical Lansing move:

At Mr. BigStuff Labor and Moving, we've built our entire business on the opposite principle: complete transparency, fair pricing, and exceptional service.
If after everything you've read, you still decide to rent a truck yourself, here are the critical steps to protect yourself from the worst of these practices:
Get everything in writing. Request a complete breakdown of ALL potential charges before reserving.
Document everything. Take photos of the mileage, fuel gauge, and any existing damage before leaving the lot.
Fill the tank yourself immediately after pickup to establish the true "full" level.
Check your insurance coverage before accepting their expensive protection packages.
Inspect the vehicle thoroughly for safety issues and insist on a different truck if you find problems.
Read every line of the contract before signing.
Be prepared to walk away if anything feels deceptive or unclear.
